The Once – Group of the Year at 2011 ECMA

The Once may have been happier but they can’t remember when. Since the birth of their debut self-titled album in 2009, they have received 4 Music NL Awards, 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards and now a 2011 ECMA for Group Recording of the Year!

Now with both Ireland AND UK agents onside and some huge international touring announcements coming down the pipe, they are ready to live the Canadian Dream: emptying the bank account as they record their sophomore album and travel across the country to some major folk festivals including Winnipeg, Edmonton, Canmore and Calgary!

Yes that is right. As we speak Geri, Phil and Andrew are back in St. John’s recording. The new CD will be released on their label Borealis and details will be announced in the coming months.

Count on a few surprises before then tho!

Keep your eyes, ears and hearts open…

Hello Canada! Hello Europe!

We are thrilled to announce a great deal of our summer tour schedule. From Alberta to Europe, we will be embarking on our largest tour yet (hopefully Newfoundland will recognize us in the fall!).
Yup! That’s right. We head out on July 5th and we won’t be back in Newfoundland until late September.
Please visit our Tour section to learn more. Our Canadian dates are posted and our busy little office will soon announce our Denmark, Germany, England and Ireland dates (anybody want us to bring back souvenirs??).
Happy Spring!
The Once

A great little writeup from Boston.

This came across our inbox today – thanks boston.com!

“Among connoisseurs of Canadian folk music, Newfoundland tends to be a blind spot — if it registers on radars at all. Cape Breton has its high-stepping fiddlers, but what about its neighbor? Two new albums on Toronto’s Borealis Records suggest there’s a lot to admire about Newfoundland’s vibrant, contemporary roots scene.”

“Singer-songwriter Ron Hynes found his muse for his new album, “Stealing Genius,’’ while on sabbatical in Woody Point on the western coast of Newfoundland. The austere landscape seeps into his songs, many of which were inspired by some of his favorite Canadian poets and authors, including Stan Dragland (“House’’) and fellow Newfoundlanders Donna Morrissey (“Blood and Bones’’) and Al Pittman (“30 for 60’’).”

“Meanwhile, everything old is new again on the self-titled debut from the Once, a young folk trio (below) that puts a contemporary spin on the province’s Irish and Scottish influences. Beneath its buzzing electric guitar, “Maid on the Shore’’ is a thoroughly modern sea shanty, while the ballad “Marguerite’’ salutes the majesty of the hills of Newfoundland and the nostalgia they induce. Close harmonies turn Tom Waits’s “The Briar and the Rose’’ into an elegy. The real stunner, though, is an a cappella cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Coming Back to You’’ that conjures the beauty and simplicity of the late Kate Wolf.”

Thank you so much for all your support over 2010!

Our hearts are full with joy heading into 2011 for the amazing gift you have given us. To be able to play our music and see so much of the world this year is beyond our wildest dreams. We love the fact that our album is under so many trees this Christmas…it’s really hard to get our heads around it all actually. Thank you. Thank you.

While our shows are over for 2010, rest assured right after Christmas we are back in studio and yes…there is a new album coming. We hope it will find a special spot in your homes in spring.

For now though, we wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and safe travels. Enjoy your time with loved ones and keep a song in your hearts.
